SOCA’s Grid is one of four installations featured in Between Your Love & Mine, an installation exploring themes of borders, community and kinship curated by Stefan Novakovic. The sculpture park exhibition was mounted for the Detroit Month of Design in the East Side neighbourhood of Little Village. Featuring designers from across the U.S.A. and Canada, the border’s line is reinterpreted as a circle that holds difference without separation, honouring the kinships that emerge through movement and encounter.
Grid comprises 25 stakes rising from the ground. Often used to anchor fences, these heavy-duty 6 x 6 wood posts are a ubiquitous element of North American life, demarcating property and territory. Instead of a line, they are arranged in a grid, creating a space shaped by a sense of transition. Instead of a discrete threshold, the boundary is stretched into three dimensions.
