The Montreal Afro-Canadian Cultural Centre / Centre culturel afro-canadien de Montréal (CCAM) is an ambitious project that reimagines the historic École des Beaux-Arts as a bold, contemporary hub for Black culture and creativity in the heart of downtown Montreal. Situated at the edge of the Quartier des Spectacles, the design carefully balances heritage preservation with dynamic new interventions. A striking new entrance pavilion will provide universal accessibility and a clear architectural identity, while a rear addition will house a state-of-the-art performance hall, anchoring the Centre as a major venue for cultural production and public gathering.
Conceived as both a cultural landmark and a community resource, the CCAM will offer a rich mix of creative and public-facing spaces. An archive will preserve community legacies. Purpose-built studios for dance, digital media, and audio production will support artistic collaboration and content creation, while a suite of gathering spaces will invite daily use and spontaneous encounter. Designed to foster both introspection and exchange, the architecture of the CCAM reflects its mission: to celebrate Black heritage, enable artistic innovation, and create a lasting civic space rooted in inclusion, openness, and cultural vitality.
